Do you have a friend who raves about selling at an online auction? Has he or she bragged to you about making lots of money selling merchandise on eBay? Have you wanted to try it but don't know the first thing about how online auctions operate? The first thing you should do is go to the eBay site and have a look around, take a look at some of the listings, search for items similar to what you may have to sell, and check the selling prices. eBay also has some tutorials and information designed to get you started, so make sure you read this, also.
You will notice that there are several different categories available on eBay, and what you want to sell should be placed as a listing in the one that best suits the item. This may be a bit confusing at first, but if you take a look at what is listed in each category, you will have a pretty good idea of which one you should choose. If not, there are eBay research tools available that can offer you suggestions and advice, and help you decide what specific category your item falls into. Listing in the proper category makes a huge difference in how many people see what you are offering. Most buyers type a specific item into the search box to locate what they are looking for, and then select a category-for instance, someone who is looking for an old table may look in the 'antique' category, or perhaps the 'collectibles.'
If you have such an item and you have it listed in 'everything else,' chances are it might not be seen. Choose your category wisely, and many times it's to your benefit to select more than one, or even three. The idea is to get that item out there where people who are looking will be able to find it easily, thus increasing your chances of selling. Sound too complicated? It's not, if you take the time to peruse the whole site. Have patience, and make sure you never list something without first learning how the site works. Read about the fees you will have to pay for a listing, (you can find this info on a separate page) what percentage you will owe eBay if your item sells, and what types of payment you should accept.
Open a PayPal account if you don't already have one. This is the most preferred method of payment for both buyers and sellers, makes everything convenient and allows for instant payment. You will find that you are learning as you go, and eBay selling will get a lot easier for you once you are aware of all the things you are able to do to help sell your merchandise. Start off slowly-don't list more than one or two items at the most so that you can get a feel of how bidders react, see what you can do to improve your listing description, choose which way you want to sell, (buy it now, set a reserve price, or just list it for sale starting out with a certain price).
You will become more used to the way the auctions are run as time goes on. You may be extremely fortunate to sell your item for the price you want the very first time out, and this may be the incentive you need to try again, but be aware that it may not happen this way each and every time. It all depends on what you have to offer, how much in demand this item is, and of course, the price you have set. Many times merchandise just sits there with no activity, but if you have taken advantage of all the eBay research tools available, it may not be anything you are doing wrong, just that the market is a little slow right at that particular time.
